iPhone Screen Not Responding After a Drop? Here’s What’s Usually Happened

One of the more frustrating iPhone problems is when the screen still turns on after a drop, but suddenly stops responding properly.
Sometimes only part of the screen works. Sometimes typing becomes erratic. In worse cases, the phone appears completely frozen even though it is still powered on.
A lot of people assume the phone is dead at that point.
Usually, it is not.

The Glass Is Not Always the Main Problem
People naturally focus on visible cracks.
But the touch layer underneath the glass is usually the part that fails after impact.
Modern iPhone screens contain multiple delicate layers compressed together extremely tightly. Even if the outer glass survives reasonably well, the impact can still damage:
The touch digitiser
Internal display connectors
The OLED panel itself
Pressure-sensitive components beneath the screen
That is why some phones look almost fine externally but stop responding properly afterwards.
Common Signs of Screen Damage After a Drop
Parts of the screen stop responding
You may notice dead zones where taps no longer register.
Ghost touching
The phone starts pressing things on its own or typing randomly.
Delayed response
Typing suddenly feels laggy or inconsistent.
Green lines or flickering
More common on OLED models after impact damage.
The screen goes black but the phone still vibrates
The phone itself may still be working normally underneath.
Sometimes the Damage Gets Worse Gradually
This catches people out quite often.
A phone may survive the initial drop and continue working for several hours or even days before the screen starts failing properly.
That usually happens because:
Internal pressure damage spreads
Connectors loosen slightly over time
Tiny fractures inside the display worsen with use
A Hard Reset Is Worth Trying First
Before assuming the screen needs replacing, it is worth forcing a restart.
On most newer iPhones:
Press volume up
Press volume down
Hold the power button until the Apple logo appears
If the screen is still unresponsive afterwards, the issue is likely physical rather than software related.
Cheap Screen Replacements Often Fail Earlier
This is something people rarely get warned about.
Very low quality replacement screens can become less responsive over time, especially after smaller knocks that an original-quality screen would usually survive.
That does not mean every aftermarket screen is bad, but there is a noticeable difference between very cheap parts and higher quality replacements.
