Why Does My iPhone Keep Restarting Randomly?

A random restart every now and then is annoying.

When it starts happening several times a day, especially while charging, opening apps or using the camera, it usually means something deeper is going on.

We see this fairly regularly with older iPhones across Kent, particularly devices that have already had a few years of heavy daily use.

The tricky part is that there isn’t one single cause.

Sometimes It’s Software

Not every restarting issue means your phone is dying.

A buggy iOS update, corrupted app or storage problem can occasionally cause the phone to reboot unexpectedly.

A few things worth checking first:

Check your storage space

iPhones with almost no free storage can start behaving unpredictably.

Go to:Settings → General → iPhone Storage

If the phone is completely full, clearing space can sometimes stabilise it.

Update iOS

Apple regularly patches bugs that affect performance and stability.

If you are running an older version of iOS, update it before assuming the phone needs repairing.

Remove suspicious apps

If the restarting started after installing a certain app, that app may be crashing the system repeatedly.

Battery Problems Are Extremely Common

This is one of the biggest causes we see.

As iPhone batteries age, they become less stable under load. The phone may restart when:

  • Opening demanding apps

  • Using the camera

  • Charging

  • Switching between apps

  • Using mobile data outdoors in cold weather

A degraded battery cannot always provide stable power consistently.

Check Battery Health

Go to: Settings → Battery → Battery Health & Charging

If battery health is below 80%, performance and stability issues become much more common.

This is especially true on older iPhone models.

Overheating Can Trigger Restarts

iPhones are designed to protect themselves from heat damage.

If the device overheats repeatedly, the system may shut down or restart automatically.

Common causes include:

  • Cheap chargers

  • Heavy gaming

  • Poor battery condition

  • Internal faults

  • Hot weather combined with charging

If your iPhone feels unusually hot during normal use, it is worth getting checked.

Charging Port Issues Can Also Cause Instability

A damaged charging port can sometimes interrupt power delivery while charging.

People often describe:

  • Charging disconnecting randomly

  • Phone vibrating repeatedly on charge

  • Apple CarPlay disconnecting

  • Restarts while plugged in

If you are already noticing charging issues alongside restarting problems, the charging port could be contributing to it.

When It Becomes a Hardware Problem

If the phone:

  • Gets stuck on the Apple logo

  • Constantly boot loops

  • Restarts every few minutes

  • Shuts off with plenty of battery remaining

There is a good chance the issue is hardware related rather than software.

That does not always mean the phone is beyond repair, but it is usually worth diagnosing properly rather than repeatedly factory resetting it.
