Spilled water on your iPhone? Dropped it in the sink, bath, or toilet?

It happens more than you’d think — and what you do next matters. If you’re asking what to do when your iPhone gets wet, this guide will walk you through the right steps to give your phone the best chance of survival.

1. Turn it off immediately

Don’t press buttons repeatedly or check if it “still works” — that can force water deeper inside. Power it off as soon as possible to prevent short circuits.

2. Remove accessories and dry the outside

Take off any case or screen protector. Use a soft, absorbent cloth to dry the outside — especially around the charging port, buttons and speaker holes.

Do not plug it in. Even if it looks fine, charging a wet iPhone can cause serious internal damage.

3. Don’t use rice

The old rice trick is a myth. It won’t fix water damage — and can make things worse by introducing dust or starch particles into your phone.

Instead, leave the phone to dry upright in a dry, ventilated area.

4. Use silica gel if you have it

If you have silica gel packets (like the ones found in shoe boxes), put them in a sealed container with your phone. They absorb moisture much more effectively than rice.

5. Don’t use heat

Avoid hairdryers, ovens, radiators or direct sunlight. Heat can warp or damage internal components. Air-drying is always safer.

6. Leave it off for at least 24–48 hours

It’s tempting to turn it back on to check — but wait. The longer it stays powered off while drying, the better the odds of avoiding permanent damage.
